On Friday 9th November we held a special Remembrance Worship in school. Mr Atkinson came and talked to the children about World War 1 and how it affected families in our community. We presented a wreath to Mr Atkinson to be laid at the Whixley war memorial and two Year 6 children wrote a beautiful response prayer. The choir sang Shalom and we all sang Peace, Perfect Peace and It’s a long way to Tipperary.
During the week we have learned about Remembrance and the Armistice Anniversary. Children in Class 3 made clay poppies with the residents of St John's Nursing home which have been displayed in St Thomas's church over the Remembrance weekend.
We have also supported the British Legion by selling poppies in school.
We enjoyed workshops led by Mrs Weatherburn. The children learned about meat free alternatives and the impact of healthy eating on our bodies and the environment. We also were able to taste three delicious dishes.
On Wednesday 25th October Mr Martin Simpson, one of our Governors arranged for the children to all plant crocus bulls in the Church garden. The project is part of the Rotary Club project to support the End Polio Now Campaign by planting purple crocuses. Mr Simpson also spoke to the children in assembly about the appeal. The School Council are working on a fundraising idea to support this project later in the year. Thank you to Mr Simpson for organising this lovely activity for us which supports such an important project.
We held a non uniform day to support World Cerebral Palsy Day and we raised £72.00. The money donated will be given to a charity which supports one of our children. Thank you for all of the donations.
Mr Godfrey led a brilliant Numberfun Day. We began with a worship focusing on talents and this included a video of children in a school in a different community from ours. Each class then had a maths session based on the Numberfun songs. We are now looking forward to including the songs in our maths lessons.
We had a lovely Harvest Festival Service in St Thomas’s Church. Each class presented a Harvest song or poem and the choir also performed. We brought food donations for PAFRAS which were received by Rev’d Sarah and we also included a Global theme in the service by supporting Farm Africa and wearing our wellies to the service. Thank you for all of the donations, we raised £84.67 for Farm Africa. Thank you also to Ainsty Farm Shop who donated the beautiful Harvest Sheaf.
Well done also to the school choir sang harvest songs at Cafe Church on Sunday 7th October in Whixley Village Hall.
We held our Year 6 Leaver’s and end of year celebration in St Thomas’s Church on Wednesday 18th July. The service was led by the Year 6 children and featured presentations from the Collective Worship team, each class and the choir. Lots of families joined us for the service which celebrated the children’s time at the school and reflected positivity towards the future. The service ended with everyone singing ‘A Million Dreams’ from The Greatest Showman.
On Tuesday 17th July we had a multicultural dance day where each class had an hour long workshop focusing on Bollywood Dance. At the end of the day each class performed their amazing dances to the rest of the school.
This week the Key Stage 2 children have performed their production of Treasure Island. The play has been brilliant with children acting, singing, dancing and telling the story beautifully. It has been lovely to see some of our children taking starring roles and we have been amazed by their solo singing! Well done to the Key Stage 2 team and thank you all the families who came to watch and provide the wonderful costumes.
On Wednesday 4th July we had a visit from Amy Lax, who is a gardener who lives in the village. She talked to the children in assembly about gardening and why it is so important to her. Amy brought a walnut tree which had grown from a nut planted by a squirrel to show the children. We hope to keep in touch with Amy and have asked her to support our gardening club.
