This area of the website will give you information about our curriculum.

CURRICULUM INTENT

At Green Hammerton CofE Primary School we aim to provide a curriculum that embraces independence, enquiry, thinking and creativity. This is underpinned by a focus on essential skills for developing powerful, independent learners. When children leave Green Hammerton CofE Primary School at the end of Year 6, they should be equipped with the full range of skills that enables them to become lifelong learners. As a Church school, our Christian ethos and values are at the heart of everything that we do. We have a commitment to teaching about global citizenship and courageous advocacy, ensuring that children are empowered to treat all people with dignity and respect.

CURRICULUM IMPLEMENTATION

At Green Hammerton CE Primary School we aim to provide the children with a curriculum which is broad, well balanced and above all stimulates the children to learn. Through a positive and caring environment, we provide the opportunity for every child to reach their full potential. We embrace our Christian values and ensure all children are ready for their next steps.

Our teaching of content and knowledge is based on the EYFS Curriculum and National Curriculum for KS1 (Years 1 and 2) and KS2 (Years 3 - 6) in the core curriculum subjects of English, Maths, Science, foundation subjects of History, Geography, Art, Design and Technology, Music, Physical Education, Computing, French and Religious Education.

At Green Hammerton C of E Primary School, the PSHE curriculum (Personal, Social and Health Education) is embedded in all that we do. Children and their wellbeing is key to helping children make sense of the world and support progress across all subject areas. As a school, we have invested in a scheme entitled ‘JIGSAW’. It covers all year groups, delivered through 6 main themes of ‘Being Me in My World’, ‘Celebrating Difference’, ‘Dreams and Goals’, ‘Healthy Me’, ‘Relationships’ and ‘Changing Me’. These units build upon each other year on year, to ensure progression for our pupils.

Jigsaw 3-11 offers a comprehensive Programme for Primary PSHE including statutory Relationships and Health Education, in a spiral, progressive and fully planned scheme of work, giving children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive relationships with themselves and others.  With strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, Jigsaw 3-11 properly equips our teachers to deliver engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole-school approach. Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.

Alongside ‘JIGSAW’ we also aim to meet the needs of our own community and look at the context in which our children grow up. This means listening to our pupils through discussions (Pupil Voice) and what life in Green Hammerton is like for them.

As a Church of England School our curriculum is distinctive in promoting Christian values and the teachings of the Anglican Church. Studies are supported by first hand experiences such as visiting our village Church and visits to other places of worship to widen pupils’ knowledge and understanding of the wider world. The teaching of Religious Education is statutory in all schools. It is taught following the North Yorkshire Agreed Syllabus of Religious Education in conjunction with the Understanding Christianity units of work.
