On Thursday 9th May Rowena and Michael from Christian Aid came to talk to us about the theme of Christian Aid week this year. They talked about a project in Sierra Leone, which helps girls to have equal rights to education. On Monday 13^th May, Steph Cooper came to talk to us about Christian Aid week and told us about Kadiatu who dreams of becoming a doctor. 

Revd. Sarah is leading a project called Open the Book where community members tell Bible stories through drama in Collective worship in school. On Saturday 26th January a team of volunteers from the churches in our parish met with the York Youth Church (Yo-Yo) team to learn about the project. The teams will then lead Collective Worship in the schools in our parish. This was a wonderful opportunity for our churches to work on a joint project and we look forward to their first presentation.

On Tuesday 5th March the Yo-Yo team led a day of workshops and Collective Worship in school focusing on Lent. Some members of the Open the book team visited to see the project in action.

On Thursday 11^th April we had our first Open the Book Worship. Five members of the team bravely acted out the Palm Sunday story from the Lion Story Teller Bible. The children had made palm leaves with Mr Atkinson in the morning and used them during the story. This was such a fun way to share the story and we are very much looking forward to the next one!

On Thursday 11^th April the Rock Steady groups performed to their families and to the school, with Alana their leader. Everyone was very impressed by the singing and playing. Rock Steady lessons will be on Tuesday afternoons after Easter.

The choir performed in the Monkey Boy concert in the Royal Hall in Harrogate. The first half consisted of Disney songs and performances from the Nepalese children. In the second half we performed the Monkey Boy musical which had been specially written to tell the Nepalese Folk Story.

We held our Easter Service this week. Each class performed a poem, reading or song. The choir sang one of their songs from the Monkey Boy concert and the Year 5 and 6 brass group performed Yellow Chick. The Year 5 and 6 children then performed the drama that they had written with the Yo Yo team and children from each class read thoughtful prayers. Thank you to Rev’d Sarah for supporting our service and to everyone who came to join us. We collected £50.51 for the Ryan’s Well Foundation who ask for money to be collected in watering cans.

On Friday 5^th April FOGHS held an Easter Treasure Hunt and Teas after school. This was a really busy event and it was lovely to see families completing the trail and then enjoying refreshments. Thank you to FOGHS for organising such a lovely event and for their continued support to the school.

This year we will took part in the Big Pedal and it was lovely to see so many children to cycling or scooting to school. We managed 1079 journeys by cycling, scooting or walking which with a daily score of 64.5% and 58.63% for supporters – well done!

On Friday 22^nd March we hosted a visit from 20 Nepalese children, their teachers, and two members of the Harrogate Rotary Club. The children are visiting the UK as part of a project funded by the Rotary Club which will include a performance of the Monkey Boy concert at the Royal Hall in Harrogate, which our school choir will participate in.

The children visited classrooms and took part in singing, clay modelling, rocket making and Chromebook work. They then enjoyed playtime with the Green Hammerton children. At 11am we had Collective Worship where Sumit the Nepalese Music Teacher taught us all a Namaste song. Two Year 6 children then read a prayer and Rev’d Sarah gave a blessing. We were also pleased to welcome Mr Atkinson who joined us for the worship.

The Nepalese visitors were each presented with a pencil case designed by the Class 4 children and the Nepalese Schools gave Green Hammerton two beautiful plaques. The visitors then enjoyed lunch before heading off to their next school visit.

We will all remember his morning for a very long time as the Nepalese children and their teachers were so smart, polite and grateful. Our children and staff thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them and were amazed by their interest, small appetites and very quick maths skills!

On Saturday 16^th March Mrs Law and Miss Langley held our first ever Go Kart event. Three families braved the rain, two with fantastic home-made go karts and one family with toy go karts. We enjoyed time laps in the playground and down the drive. We then warmed up with hot chocolate and snacks and winners were announced for fastest go kart and best design.
