Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

Learning Through Play

The power of play should never be underestimated and is firmly at the heart of our all learning. Our children explore, work together and express themselves through their own ideas to discover new and exciting things whilst having fun!

At Green Hammerton C of E Primary School, our youngest children begin their learning journey in our Early Years Foundation Stage provision.

We are very proud to have an Early Years Foundation Stage Unit which provides high quality care and education for children aged between 3 and 5 years. The unit is led by an experienced and qualified Early Years Teacher who is supported by a fantastic team.

Early Years Development

In Early Years our children learn through a play based curriculum. They will acquire new skills, knowledge and demonstrate their understanding through 7 areas of learning and development.

The first 3 are described as prime areas, these are:

  • Communication & Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social & Emotional Development.

These prime areas are those most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning.

As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas below:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding The World
  • Expressive Arts & Design

The Early Years team supporting our children make sure that the activities are suited to each child’s unique needs and extend their learning each day. Our children experience a range of topics, however the adults will also adapt teaching and learning in the moment to follow the interests of our children.

Our children have free flow access to provision inside and outside and can choose where they prefer to learn each day whilst supported by our staff.

Our outdoor area was renewed in January 2023.  The facilities have already made such a huge difference to the children.  Here are some photos of the area.
